Profile
When I left school I had no clear idea of what I wanted to do. I had an interest in electronics, computers and flying. Initially I started work in electrical goods repair company and earned extra money after putting a card in the local post office window, the first sign of things to come.
A year later the chance of a company car and more money brought me to the Motorway Services sector where, as a forecourt retail manager and then the national calibration manager, I learnt many valuable management skills.
Having moved to Scotland I decided to re-enter university as an adult and start a company retailing and repairing computers and peripherals to support myself. The company quickly grew to 7 stores, 13 staff and covered all 3 IT sectors - Retail, Business Server Networking and Websites.
After 10 years a change of pace was needed and I made the decision to sell the business to train as a flying instructor, fulfilling a life long ambition and to enjoy a reduced workload as a freelance website developer.
Today I work on many web based projects for a wide variety of companies and fly single and multi engined aircraft almost every week. The path to becoming a flying instructor is a long and expensive one, it has the same requirements as becoming an airline (commercial) pilot. I am currently studying for the theory element, 14 exams (this takes about 2 years) then I move on to the CPL and FI course.
Special Project or Interesting Work
During the years I ran the computer company most of my spare time was taken up with motorcycle instruction. A couple of years later I turned this hobby into a small contract business working from a Honda motorcycle dealership training learner riders, advanced riders and instructors. I rode many brand new motorcycles however riding for work spoiled the enjoyment of pleasure riding - a cautionary tale.
