Profile
On graduation from KHS I entered the RAF College at Cranwell and was commissioned as a pilot. After several flying tours, on Vulcan bombers, Jet Provosts and Victor tankers, I was gradually moved to staff appointments in various HQs; these provided experience of training development, equipment procurement, policy development and strategic planning. On graduation from staff college, I enjoyed two exchange tours in the USAF, evaluating the USAF's operational readiness and coordinating operational exercises in the Pacific.
On promotion to group captain I was the Director of the Crisis Management Centre in MOD and finally Assistant Director of Air Operations in Whitehall.
On retirement from the RAF I joined the BMA as their Director of Membership. I was responsible for the membership administration of over 140,000 doctors and medical students. This was primarily achieved via my staff of 20 database managers.
