to this years Chapel and Lunch Reunion

Sunday 25th. September 2011

partners and family are most welcome

Rohilla Day

In September 1959 whilst returning from a sailing holiday from the Channel Isles, the yacht Rohilla a 16 ton converted R.N.L.I. lifeboat was tragically lost at sea together with all hands. Those being a member of school staff supported by a second adult and five pupils from school. In 2008 it was requested by former pupils that a Sunday morning chapel service, followed by a lunch reunion be arranged; similar to those held in the 1950's and 1960's. In October that year this was arranged and supported by 35 people. Repeated in September last year, proving so successful with 60 people attending the lunch, and by the afternoon numbers had risen to 65 former pupils and staff.

Agreed by the Rev. Nick Seward, BEng MA Headmaster this event would be established into our calendar as "Rohilla Day" fixed annually for the last Sunday in September an Exeat weekend, so we are free to roam and reminisce on The Hill.

I had been on the two previous cross channel saing trips and was due to go on the fated voyage of The Rohilla. My mother could not afford to pay the costs of the holiday so I did not go.My two best friends Matthew Rudman and David Earle were lost.I often tell my kids that had I gone they would have never been born ! My wife says that she would never have met me and would thus, have a enjoyed a far happier life !! :D We have been married for 48 years !! I successfully researched the origins of The Rohilla in memory of my two friends.

Sadly I missed the reunion last year but have every intention of being there this year.Colin Noble who perished on the Rohilla was my first real form master who taught us all subjects in the 'old Plymouth House' in 1951/2.
He was simply brilliant, his tolerance of us idiots trying to learn French and Maths had to be seen to be believed. He was totally dedicated to teaching.
It would be great to have as many old boys ( and girls) back for this reunion as possible, we need support both for the School , KHA and Schooldays! plus you never know who you are going to meet who you havn't seeen for years. On Speech Day this year I met two former class mates I last saw and spoke to in 1959!
