Some nice thoughts and images are running through my mind as I remember Mr Gilmore. Was there ever a more dapper man that I have ever met? Was there ever a sharper crease, smarter tweed or shinier shoes than he had? In the class he was a talk and chalk teacher who wrote neatly the key events on the blackboard. We knew our Tudors and Elizabethans!

Years later when I met him at reunions I was struck by just how affable and dry humoured he was. Thankyou "Penguin" for your part in our education and memories.

So sad to hear this news. I remember Mr Gilmore so well and although neither history or French were my favourite subjects, he always made the lessons interesting. As has already been mentioned, he was a target for winding up, but I remember him dealing with it all in fun - eventually. As we grew older, I believe he became a good friend and had a wicked sense of humour. Having not visited the hill for around 20 years, I was taken aback some years ago when meeting him again as he remembered me (I was particularly unremarkable at school) without introduction. Another sad loss.

I loved History and although Pengy just wrote a whole load of notes on the blackboard every lesson, he did start my interest off on the subject.
I remember him taking our class, probably U2 in 1972, to Chastleton House and getting the bug for amazing architecture. A bug that I have enjoyed ever since.
I saw him last at Gus Essame's funeral a couple of years ago and he was very weak and in a chair by then. But I told him of my love for his subject and my eldest daughters love for the subject and that it all started from him and those days.
He very sweetly said in a feeble voice "That is a very nice thing to say, thank you so much. I have done my job if others gain a love of a subject I love so much myself."
He was a proper Gent and yes from another era but one I remember fondly.

I'm always saddened by the passing of former KHS staff. I remember Mr Gilmore's history lessons vividly (my favourite subject!) and if my memory serves, he did at some stage attempt to teach me French. I also recall times when I was in VB that we would wind him up mercilessly, as schoolboys can and probably still do! RIP Mr Gilmore.

So sorry to hear about my History and English teacher, Mr Gilmore.

I remember him for being a well liked teacher in the classroom and his great sense of humour as a house tutor in Norwich House (now Severn) on Monday evenings during my time on the hill (1983-1988), will be sadly missed!!
